Three years ago, I thought my problem was finding a cheaper supplier. It wasn't.

I'm an office administrator for a 140-person engineering services company. I handle purchasing for parts and prototyping — roughly $250k a year across 8-10 vendors. Let me rephrase that: the problem wasn't the factory. The problem was my map of the manufacturing process. I was comparing apples to apples without knowing what apples looked like.

The Real Problem: Multiple Vendors, Zero Accountability

Before I consolidated, I used separate suppliers for CNC machining, laser cutting, 3D printing, and sheet metal. Each one was okay individually. Together, they were a mess. I managed four invoices, four delivery estimates, and four quality standards. What I Would Do Differently (And What I'd Tell Another Buyer)

Multi-color 3D printing is not a production technology yet — it's for prototypes, color-coded models, and design reviews. A vendor photo is not proof. Per FTC guidelines, advertising claims have to be truthful and substantiated. I apply that standard to my suppliers: show me the part, not a render.

I'm not a lawyer, so I can't speak to how every regulation applies. But from a buyer's perspective, a supplier who refuses to substantiate claims is a liability. Period.

Fourth, consolidate where it makes sense. I don't use Star Micronics for every single order. But for a project that combines CNC aluminum and a 3D printed prototype, it's easier to keep it in one place. I also like that I can request a quote online and actually see the process list. That's not a small advantage when you're managing 60+ orders a year.

The Bottom Line

The most expensive order I ever placed was the one I understood the least. I'm not saying you have to become a machining expert. But you need enough context to ask questions, and you need a vendor who can answer them without making you feel stupid.

That's why I'd rather spend 10 minutes understanding how a CNC mill works than spend 10 weeks fixing an order I approved based solely on price. A vendor who educates its customers makes the whole decision easier. The knowledge doesn't just save money — it makes the next quote easier to read. And that, for a non-engineer buyer, is worth more than any discount.
